Juan Mata announces retirement from football at age 38
Spanish midfielder Juan Mata has announced his retirement from football at the age of 38, after a long and successful career in European and Australian football.
Mata joined Melbourne Victory in September 2025, having become one of the club's shareholders. During the last season, he played 25 matches, scoring 5 goals and providing 13 assists.
The Spanish player has experienced one of the highlights of his career with Galatasaray, winning his first league title with the Turkish team, before continuing his journey in Australia and concluding his career there.
Juan Mata stated in his retirement announcement that he enjoyed every moment of last season, noting that he "fell in love with football again" in Melbourne. He also thanked his teammates, the coaching staff, the management, and the fans for the support he received during his time with the club.
Juan Mata has concluded his career, leaving a significant mark on European football, having previously played for clubs Valencia, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Galatasaray, as well as representing the Spanish national team, with whom he won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA European Championship in 2012.
