Sporting turn the tables on Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League

Sporting Lisbon turned around a deficit against Turkish side Galatasaray to secure a thrilling 3-1 victory in the match that took place on Wednesday evening at the José Alvalade Stadium, as part of the first round of the group stage in the UEFA Champions League.

The Portuguese team made a completely different offer after the break, as coach Rui Silva succeeded in rearranging his team's tactics, turning the match in Sporting's favor after a first half in which they struggled against Turkish dominance.

Galatasaray started the match strongly, dominating possession and second balls, taking advantage of the hosts' decline and the lack of focus from their players. The Turkish pressure resulted in a lead goal after a long throw-in into the penalty area, which was followed by Torreira, who shot towards the goal, before it deflected off Gonzalo Ignacio and settled into Rui Silva's net by mistake.

Despite a difficult start, Sporting managed to come back into the match in the 27th minute, when the team launched a quick counter-attack that ended with Guiné Katamo, who succeeded in scoring the equalizer, bringing his team back into the game.

However, the draw did not change much in the shape of the match in its first half, as Galatasaray continued their attacking movements, especially through Leroy Sané, Torreira, and Akgun, with attempts to exploit the spaces behind Sporting's defense, while the home side could not involve Luis Guilherme, Zalazar, and Luis Suárez as required.

Sporting's midfield, led by Altimira and Dombia, appeared less cohesive as the Turkish team squandered several chances due to a lack of precision in the final touch.

With the start of the second half, the scene changed completely. Sporting appeared more organized and stronger, increasing their pressure on Galatasaray, while the Turkish team began to lose the control they had imposed during the first half.

In the 53rd minute, Doumbia provided a precise pass behind Galatasaray's defense to Luis Suárez, who rounded the goalkeeper before being touched by Jacobs inside the area. Referee Espen Eskås awarded a penalty, without intervention from the Video Assistant Referee.

Luis Suárez stepped up to take the penalty and successfully placed the ball in the net, giving Sporting the lead for the first time in the match.

Galatasaray's coach Okan Buruk attempted to rectify the situation by bringing on Rafael Leão instead of Sané, but the change did not stop the Portuguese team's dominance, which continued to impose its style and control the flow of the game.

The third goal did not take long to arrive, as Zalazar added the third in the 63rd minute with a brilliantly executed direct free kick, sending the ball into the top corner of the Galatasaray net.

After the goal, the Turkish team seemed unable to return to the match, despite Buruk's attempts from the bench to change his team's shape. Meanwhile, Sporting dealt with the remaining minutes intelligently, maintaining their lead without facing significant difficulties.

With this victory, Sporting have collected their first 3 points in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, having turned around a deficit to win 3-1.
