Liverpool turn the tables on Atlético Madrid and start Champions League with thrilling win
Liverpool secured a valuable 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening, in the first round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 2026-2027, after the hosts turned around a goal deficit into a thrilling win.
Atlético Madrid took the lead in the 17th minute through Spanish player Marcos Llorente, who capitalised on a superb through ball from Julián Álvarez to find the net against Liverpool and give the Spanish side an early advantage.
Liverpool fought back to equalise through Dominik Szoboszlai in the 40th minute, before the hosts continued to apply pressure after the break, with Argentine Alexis Mac Allister scoring the winning goal in the 50th minute with a powerful strike, turning the match in favour of the English side.
With this victory, Liverpool secured their first three points in their European campaign, while Atlético Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a loss, despite leading in the first half.
