Courtois: We faced a big opponent, and this is how I saved Hakan's shot
Thibaut Courtois appeared in press statements following Real Madrid's 2-1 win against Inter in the first round of the UEFA Champions League at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Thibaut Courtois said after the win against Inter by a score of 2-1: "In the end, we played against a great opponent, Inter is one of the best teams in Europe, and the match could have ended 4-4. We took advantage of their mistakes, and they could only score very late, we could have settled the match earlier."
Speaking about the struggles of the defenders, Courtois said: "I think the midfielders suffered the most, we lacked control when we saw there was no clear chance, perhaps it would have been better to drop back and control the game. The match was extremely crazy, and that is something that needs to be improved."
Regarding the lack of scoring effectiveness, he said: "Against Real Betis, it was a match we should have won, but we lacked the finishing touch, and today there was also a bit of that. We capitalized on their mistakes, but in open play, we failed to score, and the same happened against Betis."
Regarding his save from Hakan Çalhanoğlu's free kick: "Due to bad luck, Rashford scored in my goal in the clásico from the angle I was responsible for, as he struck it very well but I moved a bit. However, with Lamine in the FIFA World Cup when he got a free kick, I stayed in my corner, and today I did the same. If he puts it over the wall, you have to applaud him, but I won't move from my corner anymore."
