Difficult start for Nmétcha with Dortmund as fatigue takes its toll
Felix Nmecha faces a tough start with Borussia Dortmund in the new season, as the German midfielder has yet to regain his usual physical and technical form following a demanding last season and his participation with Germany in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Niko Kovač has confirmed that Nmecha "has not yet reached the level he can achieve," pointing out that his participation in the FIFA World Cup and the unusual preparation for the season have affected his physical readiness.
Kovac has added that the coaching staff does not want to rush the player's return to his best form, explaining that Nmecha needs some time, and that his appearances will be managed gradually to avoid overexertion during the long season.
Nmecha started in Borussia Dortmund's recent match against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim but was substituted at half-time. He may be rested during the match against Villarreal in the opening of Dortmund's UEFA Champions League campaign, as competition in the team's midfield intensifies.
