Does Safonov lose his place to Chevalier?

The competition for the goalkeeper position at Paris Saint-Germain is heating up, following a shaky start to the season from Russian Matvey Safonov.

Matvey Safonov, who became the first-choice goalkeeper last season and was a key figure in Paris Saint-Germain's European triumph, has conceded 8 goals in 5 matches this season, failing to keep a single clean sheet. He has also faced criticism after being partly responsible for the second goal in the team's 2-1 defeat against AS Monaco.

Despite this, coach Luis Enrique does not seem to be considering an immediate change in the starting goalkeeper. According to L'Équipe, Safonov still enjoys the coach's trust at the moment, especially since Paris Saint-Germain's defensive issues cannot be solely attributed to the Russian goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Lucas Chevalier is waiting for his chance. The 24-year-old French goalkeeper started last season as the first-choice keeper before gradually losing his place to Safonov, who established himself with strong performances during the second half of the season.

However, if Matvey Safonov's mistakes continue and his form declines, Luis Enrique may find himself forced to reopen the competition anew, as the Spanish coach has previously made bold decisions regarding the goalkeeper position and does not grant any player a permanent guarantee of their starting role.
