FC Barcelona face financial dilemma ahead of winter transfer window
FC Barcelona has around €60 million available within the financial fair play margin, giving the club a chance to make a signing during the winter transfer window. However, it faces the option of converting this amount into the maximum salary cap for the 2027-2028 season.
According to "Sport", FC Barcelona has begun planning for the winter transfer market set to open on January 2, after failing to sign a left-back at the end of the summer window. This gives Deco the opportunity to move forward with the deal if he deems it appropriate.
The newspaper clarified, citing sources from La Liga, that FC Barcelona can convert its financial fair play margin into a salary cap for next season, provided the request is submitted before the start of the winter transfer window. Only 75% of the transferred amount will be counted, which is around €45 million if the full €60 million is converted.
This option gains importance as FC Barcelona will play the first part of the 2027/2028 season for about four months at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys due to the installation works of the roof at Spotify Camp Nou, which will lead to a decrease in revenues.
According to data from the "Galinero Blu" account, the club's revenues reached €175 million in the 2024/2025 season while playing at Montjuïc, compared to expectations of reaching €290-300 million this season at Camp Nou.
If FC Barcelona returns to Camp Nou in November, its revenues could reach around €250 million in the 2027/2028 season, making the conversion of the financial fair play margin into a salary cap a means to mitigate the impact of declining revenues and maintain the 1:1 ratio.
Thus, FC Barcelona have less than three months to make their decision between using the €60 million to secure a signing in January or converting it into a salary cap for the next season.
