Vinicius Junior is no longer living the same situation he was accustomed to at Real Madrid. The Brazilian is still an indispensable player for José Mourinho, but his status is no longer supported by the level that made him one of the team's standout players for years.

As he continues to search for the best version of himself, the rise of Arda Güler and the arrival of Yan Diomande are opening up competition for positions that were not up for debate until recently.

Real Madrid's defeat to Real Betis by a score of 1-0 at the Estadio La Cartuja revealed a side of this change. The competition that initially seemed tied to the right wing position between Güler and Diomande has started to take a different direction after the Turkish player managed to assert himself with his performance, gradually shifting the focus towards the area occupied by Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius Junior made his mark in the match against Real Betis, as he struck a shot that hit the post, created a clear chance for Kylian Mbappé, and delivered the cross that ended with the overhead kick scored by Carlos Espí before it was disallowed. He also earned a penalty during stoppage time.

However, the problem was not the lack of attempts, but rather the lack of consistency. Vinicius Junior appeared in some moments, but he did not dominate the match in the way he is accustomed to, while Bellerin managed to limit his threat for long periods.

Here lies the difference between the current Vinicius Junior and the player who was once able to change the course of a match simply by gaining space and making a run from the left side. The Brazilian still possesses the ability to make a difference, but his impactful appearances have become less regular, and the constant threat that once forced opponents to treat him as the primary danger has diminished.

On the other hand, Arda Güler is doing enough to secure an important place in José Mourinho's calculations. Against Real Betis, the Turkish player was one of the most creative elements of the team, and he only left the pitch in the 64th minute due to receiving a yellow card and the risk of getting another.

Diomande's substitution was linked to these circumstances, rather than the Ivorian player's superiority in competition, as Mourinho himself confirmed when he said about Güler: "It's hard to change Arda, yes. Very hard, because he was playing very well."

Güler is no longer just a player competing for a position; he has become a player who asserts his presence through his performances on the pitch, which makes Yan Diomande's place in the starting lineup more difficult.

Yan Diomande has joined Real Madrid to raise the level of competition, with İlkay Gündoğan initially appearing to be at risk of losing his position. However, the Turkish player's development has changed the equation.

With every strong performance from Güler, the space available for Diomande shrinks, while attention turns to the other side, where Vinicius holds a significant position he has earned over the years, but it now needs more reasons to maintain it.

This does not mean that Mourinho has actually made a choice between Yan Diomande and Vinicius Junior; such a preference has not yet been raised, and it may be too early to reach it. However, having a player waiting for his chance alongside another player who has become more influential changes the nature of competition within the team.

Vinicius Junior has not gained his status at Real Madrid due to just one season, but has built it over the years, reaching a point where he has become one of the club's most prominent symbols and a contender for the Ballon d'Or. The 2023-2024 season, during which he scored a goal in the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, was one of the key moments that solidified his position as a player around whom the team is built.

Kylian Mbappé's arrival has shifted some of the attacking burden towards the French player, while Vinicius Junior has continued to lose some of his impact compared to what he used to provide. Although his ceiling remains extremely high when he regains his best form, relying solely on this asset is no longer enough to keep the competition at bay.

Thus, the new picture in Real Madrid's attack looks more crowded, with Kylian Mbappé retaining his place, Jude Bellingham continuing to assert himself, and Arda Güler moving from a competitor for the spot to a player who is hard to let go of, while Yan Diomande waits for his chance.

Vinicius Junior still holds significant value at Real Madrid, but this value no longer grants him the same space as before. With the growth of Güler and the anticipation of Yan Diomande, the Brazilian's position needs to be reinforced by the level that made him one of the team's most important players.
