Alvarez's Only Exit Route to Barcelona

Amid the ongoing dispute between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona regarding Julian Alvarez's future, it appears that the Argentine striker has only one option to leave his club and join the Catalan side.

Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" has reported that reaching an agreement between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona has become impossible, leaving Alvarez with the option to unilaterally terminate his contract, a solution previously mentioned by the paper in a report published on June 24.

This option is based on Royal Decree 1006 in effect in Spain, which regulates the contractual relationship of professional athletes. FIFA does not have the authority to intervene in the matter, as both clubs belong to the same country.

Article 16 of the decree states that if a professional athlete terminates their contract voluntarily, without any fault attributed to the club, the club is entitled to compensation. If there is no agreement on the amount, the global court will determine the figure based on the sporting circumstances, the damage incurred by the club, the reasons for contract termination, and other relevant factors.

If Alvarez unilaterally terminates his contract, the courts will be responsible for determining the compensation he must pay to Atletico Madrid as a result of ending his current contract.

The article states that any club that signs a player within a year of contract termination will bear financial liability. This means that Barcelona will be indirectly responsible for paying compensation if they acquire Alvarez.

This does not mean that the compensation value will reach €490 million, which is the buyout clause in Julián Alvarez's contract with Atlético Madrid, as ordinary justice in Spain considers such clauses to be excessive when imposed by clubs on players.

Alvarez's contract with Atletico Madrid runs until 2030, with the Argentine forward earning an annual salary of around €12.5 million before taxes, which is approximately €6.2 million after taxes.
