Simeone: We Aimed for Victory Despite Being a Man Down

Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, spoke about his team's 2-2 draw against Villarreal, expressing his satisfaction with many aspects of the team's performance. He also addressed the need for a more direct striker.

Simeone commented on the match: "We reached the most important point in the game when we took the lead with a goal, but we didn't manage the minutes that followed well. I won't talk about the penalties, as they were the referee's decision; there was a penalty, and I won't express my opinion on them."

He added: "I retain a lot of positive things from the team; they showed a very good reaction after the red card and wanted to win the match despite playing with ten players. Physically, we still have many players who will give us greater physical strength when they reach their best condition, but there is a clear structure to the team, and I like that."

Regarding the integration of new players: "It's not easy for any player to come to our team from another club, and it's not easy to integrate quickly. The faster they integrate, the better it is for them and the team. We need them to integrate quickly because we need them."

Regarding the absence of a traditional striker: "We are adapting to the situation we are in. Julian has played for some time already, while Lookman is not a traditional striker and faces greater difficulty playing with his back to the goal, as he needs space in front of him to play in one-on-one situations, which he excels at."

Regarding Lookman, he stated: "It is my responsibility to help him get through this period where he is not performing at his best. To win titles, you need a striker."

Regarding Julian Alvarez and whether he is a sought-after striker: "We compete with the players we have with us, and even today, I was telling the players before going onto the pitch, as long as the players are in the team, we are with them until the end."
