Kwanzaa: Liverpool's Buyback Option at a Higher Price
When Liverpool decided to sell their young defender Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, the English club did not close the door on his return. Instead, they included a buyback clause for the player in the future, a move that could make the English defender's story one of the strangest transfers in recent years.
Kwanzaa joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for £30 million, feeling that his future at Anfield required a different step to secure regular playing minutes. Indeed, he played 44 matches for the German club last season, 40 of which were as a starter, earning a call-up to represent England in the World Cup.
The irony is that Liverpool retained the right to buy back the player, and they could have activated this clause this summer for €80 million, approximately £69.3 million. However, they decided not to use it, with the buyback price set to decrease to €60 million, equivalent to around £52 million, in the summer of 2027.
Kwanzaa himself confirmed that the decision to leave was not easy, but it was necessary for his career, as he wanted the opportunity to play regularly, which he has indeed achieved in Germany, where his playing time has significantly increased compared to his last season with Liverpool.
Now, Liverpool may find itself facing a strange decision: a player who left the club's academy in search of an opportunity, developed outside Anfield, and now has the chance to return in the future, but at a much higher price than his original sale value, turning the deal into a long-term gamble that could pay off in the coming years.
