Karbala managed to grab a precious point from the home ground of their rivals Al-Shorta, after an exciting 1-1 draw on Sunday evening at the Al-Qafas Stadium in Baghdad, during the first round of the Iraqi Premier League.

Al-Qithara took the lead and dominated most of the match, but Karbala's determination and focus in the final minutes secured them a valuable point in their return to the top division.

The match began with a clear dominance from Al-Shorta, who entered with significant attacking weight from the first whistle. The Baghdad team imposed their style, controlled the ball, and attempted to circulate play to reach the Karbala goal.

In contrast, Karbala relied on defensive organization and retreating, closing down spaces and depending on quick counterattacks to surprise Al-Shorta's defense.

In the 14th minute, Al-Shorta midfielder Ali Mohsen sustained an injury, leading to his exit from the pitch as Meitham Jabbar came on as his replacement. This early forced change altered the strategy of Tunisian coach Sami Al-Trabelsi, compelling him to rearrange his midfield just a quarter of an hour into the match.

After a period of sustained pressure, the police earned a penalty in the 28th minute, which Christian Barco converted to open the scoring and give the Green Lantern the lead.

Police was the better side for most of the first half, but they failed to extend their lead, ending the first half with the home team in front.

In the second half, Police maintained the same approach with attempts to increase their lead, while Karbala appeared more daring offensively compared to the first half and tried to gradually move out of their areas.

The 62nd minute marked a significant turning point in the match, as the referee issued a direct red card to Karbala's Ali Ahmed, leaving the visiting team to finish the game with ten players. The numerical disadvantage increased the difficulty for Karbala, allowing Al-Shorta to apply more pressure in search of a second goal to secure all three points.

Despite being a man down and under pressure, Karbala players clung to the hope of a comeback. In the 93rd minute, from a well-organized attack, Austin Amoto managed to score the equalizer for Karbala, at a killer timing that ignited the stands.

A crucial goal earned a vital point for the team, giving them a moral victory in their first appearance in the Star League.

With this result, each team secures one point at the start of their journey. Police exits with a disappointing draw on home soil despite having the advantage and controlling the game, as well as the opponent's red card. They will need to address their mistakes quickly, especially in finishing matches.

Karbala secures a valuable point that reflects the team's character and determination.
