Atletico Madrid Signs Cristian Romero Until 2031

Atletico Madrid has officially announced the signing of Argentine defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur, with a contract that runs until June 30, 2031, in a deal that cost the club around €40 million.

Cristian Romero has joined Atletico Madrid after a standout career for the 28-year-old defender, who recently played in the 2026 World Cup final with the Argentina national team.

Romero stands out for his physical strength and quick reading of opponents' movements, along with his significant ability in defensive interventions and leadership presence on the pitch, making him a strong addition to the Spanish team's defense.

Romero began his professional career with Argentine club Belgrano, making his first-team debut in August 2016, before moving to Europe through Italian side Genoa. After impressing in Serie A, he joined Juventus in 2019, and during his time with the club, he had several loan spells with Genoa, Atalanta, and Tottenham.

His transfer to Tottenham has been finalized after the end of his loan period, allowing him to spend five seasons with the English club, during which he participated in 156 matches, scored 13 goals, and provided 7 assists. He also contributed to the team's victory in the UEFA Europa League in the 2024-2025 season.

Cristian Romero was awarded the Best Player of the Europa League during the tournament, and he was also named Man of the Match in the final, which saw Tottenham lift their first European trophy in 31 years.

On the international stage, Romero has played 58 matches for the Argentina national team since his debut in June 2021, and he has been a key figure in the "Albiceleste" winning the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima, and the 2022 World Cup, in addition to leading the team to the final of the 2026 World Cup.

Romero underwent medical examinations at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Center at Arturo Soria University Hospital in Madrid, before heading to Atletico Madrid's offices at the Estadio Metropolitano to sign his contract with the club.
