Koundé Seeks Clarity on Role at Barcelona Before Future Decision

Jules Koundé returned to Barcelona training this week at the Joan Gamper Sports City in Sant Joan Despí, following the end of his holiday after the World Cup. However, he is keen to understand how much Hans Flick relies on him as a starter and the position he will occupy with the team during the 2026/2027 season.

According to Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," 27-year-old Jules Koundé, who is contracted with Barcelona until 2030, is currently not thinking about leaving, even though the impression at the end of last season was that he was no longer a regular starter in Flick's plans, with several offers for his signature.

Jules Koundé is adept at playing as a center-back, but he has notably shone in the right-back position with Barcelona under the guidance of Xavi Hernandez and Hans Flick, as well as with the French national team led by Didier Deschamps, after initially needing some time to adapt to his position change.

Hansi Flick is considering relying on Eric Garcia as his starting right-back for the upcoming season, with Chavi Espart as an alternative option. Meanwhile, Jules Koundé has entered the coach's plans to play as a center-back, especially after Ronald Araújo's loan move to Liverpool.

The French defender is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City. Despite Flick's insistence on keeping him, Barcelona is not ruling out a sale if a substantial financial offer comes in. The player himself is keen on a move for sporting reasons or salary-related issues.

Barcelona renewed Jules Koundé's contract in August 2025 until 2030, amid interest from Manchester City during that period. The player recently confirmed that his desire is to continue with Barcelona, but he wants to know the club's stance on him and his role in the upcoming season before making a decision about his future.
