Mohamed Salah Shakes Up Turkish Football

Trabzonspor has made a stunning move in the Turkish transfer market, successfully convincing Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to join their ranks, outpacing the major Istanbul clubs that were favorites to secure his services.

According to The Guardian, the story of Salah's transfer to Trabzonspor began during the World Cup, when club president Ertuğrul Doğan reached out to coach Fatih Tekke and directly asked: "Do you want Mohamed Salah?" The response was swift, with enthusiasm and agreement.

Initially, Beşiktaş seemed the frontrunner to sign Egypt captain Mohamed Salah, but Trabzonspor moved quietly behind the scenes, enlisting the help of international player Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, who played a crucial role in convincing Salah to join the club by communicating with him daily.

Salah's decision is historic, as no star of his caliber has ever turned down the big Istanbul clubs, such as Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş, to join Trabzonspor.

A massive contract has been finalized, bringing with it huge financial gains.

Mohamed Salah has signed a contract with Trabzonspor for two years, until June 2028, earning a base annual salary of €10 million, along with a guaranteed signing bonus of €7 million per year, bringing his total earnings to €17 million net per season, and €34 million over two years.

The contract also includes performance-related incentives, along with Salah receiving 20% of the revenue from his personal merchandise sales through the club's official stores.

The gains have not been limited to the sporting side; the club experienced a commercial boom immediately after Salah's arrival, selling more than 17,000 season tickets within just 24 hours, generating revenues of approximately £11 million.

Trabzonspor's president expects total revenues from ticket sales, sponsorships, and merchandise to approach £22 million during Salah's time at the club, which will help finance the deal.

Mohamed Salah has made his choice regarding European competition.

Despite attractive offers from the Saudi and American leagues, Salah preferred to remain in the competitive atmosphere of Europe, as Trabzonspor aims to advance beyond the qualifying rounds to the group stage of the Europa League.

During his presentation to Trabzonspor fans, Salah stated: "I see a reception like this for the first time in my life. I came here to win titles, and I am here to bring championships to this club."

Mohamed Salah's arrival comes at a time when Trabzonspor is experiencing growth under coach Fatih Tekke, having finished last season in third place, just eight points behind champions Galatasaray, alongside winning the Turkish Cup.

Mohamed Salah will wear the number 10 shirt, while the club continues to strengthen its squad after signing Valencia defender Cenk Özkaçar and goalkeeper André Onana on loan from Manchester United. They are also in negotiations to acquire striker Darwin Núñez.

Despite the magnitude of the signing, Trabzonspor understands the difficulty of the task ahead, given Galatasaray's dominance in the Turkish league with four consecutive titles, alongside the significant spending from Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe.
