Christian Romero is still awaiting Barcelona's position before finalizing his future, despite being close to a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with the Argentine defender's name linked to the Catalan club for several weeks.

Cristian Romero, 28, is set to leave Tottenham during the current summer transfer window, with strong indications that Atletico Madrid will be his next stop. However, negotiations between the two clubs have yet to reach a final agreement.

According to Ferran Martínez, via Mundo Deportivo, the Argentinian international defender is postponing his final decision, waiting to see Barcelona's movements in the transfer market, especially after Ronald Araújo's departure to Liverpool.

Romero has caught the eye of Deco, Barcelona's sporting director, who sees the Argentine defender as a player with a mix of experience and speed. He has already held talks with his agent, Ciro Palermo.

Although Barcelona initially leaned towards signing a left-sided center-back, Deco believes that Romero, despite being right-footed, is capable of adapting and performing well on both sides of the backline.

However, Barcelona's interest in the defender has not yet turned into a formal move, as the club is focusing on other positions, primarily signing a central striker, alongside finalizing the deal for Rodri, in addition to the necessity of completing some sales before making new signings.

Currently, both Deco and Flick see the center-back position as not a top priority, with Pau Koubarsi, Gerard Martin, and Andreas Christensen available, in addition to Alvaro Cortes, who is the leading candidate to fill Araujo's spot following his departure.

Barcelona also has other options capable of playing in central defense when needed, such as Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde, who primarily occupy the right-back position, alongside Rodri.

On the other hand, Tottenham does not oppose Cristian Romero's departure during the current transfer window, having set the defender's value at around €40 million.

Negotiations are currently taking place between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, who have made a €30 million offer, indicating a financial gap that both parties still need to bridge.

As Atletico Madrid continues its efforts to finalize the deal, Barcelona's position remains a significant factor in Romero's decision, who is waiting to see if the Catalan club will make a move for him before choosing his final destination.
