Barcelona Takes on Basel in Third Pre-Season Friendly

Barcelona will play their third friendly match of the 2026-2027 preseason when they visit Swiss side Basel on Sunday, August 16, at 16:30 CET, at St. Jakob-Park.

The clash with Basel comes after Barcelona's matches against Birmingham City, followed by participation in the tri-nation tournament in Udine, Italy, which includes Nottingham Forest and Udinese.

The match against Basel will be one of the highlights of coach Hansi Flick's preparations before the official start of the season.

Barcelona and Basel have met officially twice, both in the group stage of the Champions League during the 2008-2009 season. The Catalan team achieved a significant victory in Switzerland with a score of 5-0, thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Bojan Krkić (two goals), and Xavi Hernandez, while the return match at Camp Nou ended in a 1-1 draw.

The city of Basel holds special memories for Barcelona supporters, having hosted the European Cup Winners' Cup final on May 16, 1979, where the Catalan team clinched the title against Fortuna Düsseldorf with a score of 4-3 after extra time. The match saw around 30,000 Barcelona fans in attendance, marking one of the largest away trips for the club's supporters outside Spain at that time.
