Raphinha Faces Fierce Competition for Barcelona Spot

Brazilian winger Raphinha finds himself facing strong competition for his position at Barcelona, as the club bolstered its squad during the summer transfer window with several players known for their speed and goal-scoring ability, including Anthony Gordon. This situation compels the team's winger to deliver his best performances to maintain his place in the starting lineup.

Raphinha had one of his best spells with Barcelona two seasons ago, scoring 34 goals and providing 26 assists, numbers that made it difficult to challenge his position. However, his level dropped somewhat last season as he faced recurring physical issues, managing only 21 goals and 8 assists.

According to the Spanish newspaper 'Sport', Marcus Rashford's departure was not a significant loss for Raphinha in terms of competition for the winger position, despite the impressive numbers the English player achieved, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists. However, the arrival of Anthony Gordon at Barcelona is a completely different scenario, given the strong similarities between the characteristics of the English player and Raphinha.

Gordon is viewed as a direct competitor to Raphinha for the left wing position, especially since Barcelona paid a hefty fee of €70 million for his transfer, plus an additional €10 million in variables. Despite Gordon's ability to play as a central striker, coach Hansi Flick's desire to sign a number 9 forward suggests that the German manager sees him primarily as a left winger, a position typically occupied by Raphinha.

The competition doesn't stop with Gordon, as young Belgian Jesse Bessiwou is also on Barcelona's radar. Despite being only 18 years old, the club sees him as a project for the first team and hopes he will become a key part of the team's future, which could make him an additional option for Flick on the left wing alongside Raphinha and Gordon.

Karim Adeyemi could also enter the competition for this position, although the German player prefers to play on the right wing with his opposite foot. During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Adeyemi started 43 out of 146 matches for the team on the left wing, which confirms his ability to play in this position when needed.

Despite all these options, Rafinha still enjoys the confidence of Hansi Flick, who has consistently supported the Brazilian player even during periods of decline in form. However, his recurring physical problems, particularly hamstring injuries in his right leg, have raised some concerns within the club after he suffered repeated setbacks. He also faced physical issues while representing Brazil in the World Cup.

Barcelona is focused on getting Raphinha back to his physical and technical best, hoping to see him return to the level he showcased two seasons ago. However, the club is simultaneously keen to strengthen its options on the wing in anticipation of any decline in his performance or recurrence of his physical issues.

Consequently, Raphinha's starting position is no longer guaranteed as it once was, and the Brazilian star faces a real challenge to maintain his place in Barcelona's lineup. With Gordon, Bisiu, and Ademi as potential options, Raphinha will need to deliver his best performances to convince Flick that he remains the first choice on the left wing.
