Official: Orjan Nyland Returns to Leipzig Until 2028

RB Leipzig has officially announced the return of Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland to the squad, three years after his departure, in a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Sevilla.

Niland, 35 years old, has signed a contract with Leipzig that runs until 2028, and will wear the number 1 shirt, marking his return to the club he previously represented during the 2022-2023 season.

The Norwegian goalkeeper joined Leipzig in October 2022, making three official appearances for the club. He was also part of the team that concluded the season by winning the DFB-Pokal.

After his first experience with Leipzig, Niland transferred to Sevilla, where he spent three seasons defending the team's goal in La Liga, alongside participating in the UEFA Champions League.

Nielsen returns to Germany after gaining significant experience over the past years, entering the new season with high spirits following his impressive performance with the Norway national team in the 2026 World Cup.

Nyland was the starting goalkeeper for the Norwegian national team during the tournament, contributing to a historic achievement by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in Norway's history.

The veteran goalkeeper delivered one of his standout performances in the Round of 16 against Brazil, contributing to Norway's 2-1 victory by saving a penalty taken by Bruno Guimarães, along with several key saves that kept his team in the match.

Nilsen has significant international experience, having played more than 75 matches with the Norway national team. He has also played in several major European leagues, including the Bundesliga, Premier League, and La Liga.

Throughout his career, Nielsen has worn the jerseys of Norwegian club Molde, German side Ingolstadt, Aston Villa, Norwich City, Bournemouth, Reading, and Sevilla, before returning to Leipzig.

Marcel Schaefer, the sporting director at Leipzig, welcomed the return of the Norwegian goalkeeper, confirming that the club knows him well as a player and as a person. He pointed out that the goalkeeper possesses the experience, character, and sporting quality required, along with the ability to assist young players within the team.

Sheffer stated that Niland had previously proven himself to be a team player and a reliable professional during his first stint with the club, capable of taking on responsibility. He added that Leipzig needed to add experience, character, and quality to their goalkeeping group following the departure of Peter.

Niland expressed his happiness at returning to Leipzig, confirming that the decision to come back did not require much thought, given the positive memories he holds of the club, the city, and the people working there.

The Norwegian goalkeeper added that his experience in Spain provided him with many important lessons, while participating in the World Cup with Norway was a special milestone that confirmed his enjoyment of big matches and daily competition.
