Younis Mahmoud Commemorates 2007 AFC Asian Cup

Former Iraq star and president of the Iraqi Football Association, Younis Mahmoud, marked the anniversary of the "Lions of Mesopotamia" winning the Asian Cup in 2007 on Tuesday, July 29, 19 years after the historic achievement that remains etched in the hearts of Iraqi fans.

Mahmoud released a statement via his official accounts, saying:

"On this day, we wrote an everlasting chapter in the history of Iraqi football, when Iraq was crowned champion of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.

"It was a great honor to be part of that generation that brought happiness to the Iraqis and put smiles on their faces in a moment that will never be forgotten."

Younis Mahmoud is considered the leader of that golden generation, and he scored the only goal in the final against Saudi Arabia in Jakarta, which granted Iraq its first and only continental title to date.

The goal came from a precise header following a cross from Hawar Mulla Mohammed, announcing Iraq's championship on a night that will go down in history.

That generation did not just win a championship; it brought a unified joy to Iraqis during difficult circumstances, becoming a source of pride for all the generations that followed.

Younis Mahmoud is today regarded as one of the most prominent stars of Iraqi football throughout the ages, not only for his goals and statistics but also for his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.

After retiring, he transitioned to an administrative role, currently leading the Iraqi Football Federation, aiming to replicate the glories of 2007 by supporting the national teams.
