Koundé Steps Up as Center-Back Option for Flick if Araújo Leaves

Barcelona is contemplating the possibility of relying on Jules Koundé in the center-back position for the upcoming season, should Ronald Araújo leave during the summer transfer window. Currently, there are no intentions to sign a new defender.

According to "Mundo Deportivo," the club sees Koundé as a fitting choice to return to his original position, where he excelled with Sevilla before moving to Barcelona, especially if defensive options that meet the team's needs are unavailable in the transfer market.

Eric Garcia is being considered as an option for the right-back position, alongside Hector Fort and Xavi Espart. Meanwhile, Hans Flick continues to rely on Pau Koubarsi and Gerard Martin, with confidence in Andreas Christensen.

The newspaper added that Flick is also continuing to monitor rising talents, having given Alvaro Cortes the chance to make his league debut against Deportivo Alaves. Cortes will be included in the squad for the training camp in England.

Jules Koundé, who reached the World Cup semifinals with France, is set to return to Barcelona training on August 10, alongside the international players who participated in the tournament.

The French defender is approaching his fifth season with Barcelona, having renewed his contract until 2030. He has played 188 official matches, during which he has won three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.
