New Injury Adds Painful Chapter to De Jong's Barcelona Journey
Barcelona has received a significant setback following the injury of Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has suffered a tear in the lateral ligament of his right knee. This injury will keep him out of action for several months at the start of the 2026/2027 season.
According to "Mundo Deportivo," this injury adds to a long record of injuries the player has suffered since joining Barcelona in 2019, which has included recurring muscle injuries, a knee injury, and three consecutive injuries to the right ankle.
His first major injuries began in June 2020, followed by recurring muscle injuries during the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons. He also missed about a month in April 2023 due to a knee injury that kept him out of crucial matches.
Frenkie de Jong has faced his toughest period during the 2023/2024 season, suffering three consecutive injuries to his right ankle, the latest of which occurred in the Clasico against Real Madrid, sidelining him for over five months.
The Spanish newspaper added that this injury has also ruled him out of participating with the Netherlands in the 2024 European Championship. Meanwhile, the player and Barcelona have chosen conservative treatment instead of undergoing surgery.
Despite his long struggle with injuries, Frenkie de Jong managed to reclaim his spot in Barcelona's starting lineup, only to suffer a new setback with his current injury to the lateral ligament of his right knee.
