Mourinho Bets on Güler as Real Madrid Seeks New Özil

Portuguese coach José Mourinho is betting on the development of Arda Güler this season, as he believes the Turkish midfielder has the qualities to perform the role that Mesut Özil played during his previous tenure at Real Madrid.

Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" reported that comparisons between Güler and Özil began after the Turkish player moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 for €30 million, due to their similar playmaking styles and key passes, as well as their Turkish heritage.

The newspaper added that Güler has demonstrated his technical abilities, but he has not yet succeeded in securing a regular spot in the starting lineup, having played in various positions between winger, playmaker, and midfielder.

The report indicates that Mourinho is concentrating on enhancing the understanding between Güler and Kylian Mbappé, in an attempt to replicate the successful partnership that brought together Özil and Cristiano Ronaldo during the Portuguese coach's first tenure.

The coaching staff sees that the Turkish player still needs more development to become one of the standout stars at Real Madrid, despite the progress he has made in recent seasons.

The report indicated that Turkey's early exit from the World Cup will give Güler the opportunity to undergo a complete preparation period with Real Madrid, increasing his chances of establishing himself in Mourinho's plans for the upcoming season.
