Cancelo Set for Return to Barcelona
Barcelona is nearing the return of Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo, but they are still waiting to finalize some last details with Al Hilal before making an official announcement regarding the transfer, despite having reached a complete agreement with the player on the terms of his contract.
Spanish outlet "Mundo Deportivo" reports that 32-year-old João Cancelo is enjoying his vacation in Sardinia, Italy, after completing his participation with the Portugal national team in the 2026 World Cup, while awaiting the finalization of his transfer from Al Hilal, with whom he has a contract until 2027.
The report indicates that the player is only thinking about returning to Barcelona, having given his full consent to join the team. Only a few tax matters between the parties remain to be finalized before the deal is officially completed.
The source added that coach Hans Flick is not rushing Joao Cancelo's arrival, especially since the player has only had two weeks of vacation so far. Meanwhile, the Catalan club does not expect to finalize the deal before the first team's training camp kicks off at St George's Park.
According to the report, João Cancelo is likely to begin his pre-season preparations with Al Hilal under the guidance of coach Simone Inzaghi, with his transfer to Barcelona to be completed later, especially since the Catalan team will not play their first match in La Liga until August 23 against Elche.
Currently, Flick has several options at left-back, led by Alejandro Balde, alongside Jofre Torrenys from the reserve team, and Gerard Martin, who has also become a reliable option in central defense. Additionally, young Jordi Peskir has joined training while Balde undergoes a special fitness program.
