De Jong Set for Barcelona Return as Tests Determine Injury Duration

Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is preparing to return to Barcelona between today and tomorrow, after completing his participation with the national team in the 2026 World Cup, amid concerns regarding his knee injury sustained during the tournament.

Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" reported that Frenkie de Jong's World Cup journey has ended due to injury, as he suffered a knee injury during the Round of 32 match against Morocco and was unable to finish the game.

The Dutch midfielder underwent medical tests at Barcelona's sports city last Friday to evaluate his condition, and he will undergo additional tests in the coming hours, in coordination with the club's medical staff, before a decision is made regarding the announcement of the injury details.

If the tests confirm the worst-case scenario, it is not unlikely that De Jong will undergo surgery, which could keep him off the pitch for nearly four months.

In the absence of the player, coach Hans Flick has several options to fill the gap, with Marc Bernal leading the way. Bernal previously stepped in for De Jong after his injury last season, alongside the possibility of utilizing Gavi in the same position.

The bench list includes academy players Tomi Marquez and Xavi Espart, who has recently stood out in the pivot position with the Spain U19 team. Meanwhile, Mark Casado does not feature in Flick's plans, as the club seeks a new destination for him.
