FIFA's decision to appoint Moroccan-American referee Ismail Elfath to officiate the England vs Argentina match in the 2026 World Cup semi-final has generated significant controversy, particularly given the historical and sensitive nature of the clash between the two teams.

Former English referee Mark Halsey criticized this selection, stating that he would have preferred the appointment of a more experienced European referee, given the significance of the match and the historical encounters between England and Argentina, which have previously seen many controversial officiating decisions.

Halsey pointed out that Al-Fateh, which manages its matches in the American league, lacks sufficient experience in handling games of this magnitude, noting that most players from both national teams are active in Europe. He suggested that it would have been better to choose a referee accustomed to officiating crucial stages in the Champions League or the Europa League.

Jordan Pickford, the England goalkeeper, has confirmed that his teammates will focus exclusively on football. He emphasized that they have avoided any altercations throughout the tournament and will handle the referee's decisions calmly, allowing their performance on the pitch to speak for them.
