Atletico Madrid Signs Morten Hjulmand
Atletico Madrid has officially announced an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to acquire Danish international defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand on a contract that runs until June 30, 2031.
Hjulmand, 27, is known for his physical strength, ball-winning ability, and game reading skills, along with his passing and playmaking capabilities from midfield.
Born on June 25, 1999, in Kastrup, Denmark, he progressed through the Copenhagen academy before turning professional with Admira Wacker in 2018, where he made 74 appearances over two and a half seasons.
In January 2021, he moved to Lecce, playing a pivotal role in the team's promotion to Serie A in the 2021-2022 season before leaving after 95 matches with the club.
Hjulmand joined Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2023, featuring in 141 matches and contributing to two Primeira Liga titles in the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons, as well as the Taça de Portugal in the 2024-2025 season.
He also captained Lecce and Sporting, becoming the youngest captain in Lecce's history at 23 and the second youngest captain in Serie A history after Francesco Totti.
On the international stage, Hjulmand has made 27 appearances for the Denmark national team since his debut in September 2023 against San Marino.
The player successfully completed his medical examinations before being introduced at the Estadio Metropolitano as the newest member of the Rojiblancos.
