Courtois hints at Belgium retirement if federation denies request

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois stirred controversy with decisive statements following his country's exit from the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals against Spain, revealing his desire to step away from the national team next season and fully concentrate on his journey with Real Madrid.

Courtois stated: "I would like to have a quiet year away from the national team, to play only for Real Madrid, and not participate in the UEFA Nations League."

When asked if he would stick to his decision if the Belgian federation denied his request, he responded firmly: "If they agree, that’s great. If they don’t, it will be the end!"

Courtois's comments open the door to the possibility of ending his international career if he cannot reach an agreement with the Belgian federation regarding a break from international duties after many years of representing the national team.
