Hani Abu Rida, the president of the Egyptian Football Association, submitted an official request to CAF on Thursday to increase the number of clubs participating in both the African Champions League and the Confederation Cup. In a formal statement, the football association noted that in light of the achievements of African federations participating in the 2026 World Cup, Abu Rida's request includes an increase in the number of clubs for both competitions. The proposal suggests allocating an additional spot for each member association, with these spots distributed according to the regulations and classification criteria established by CAF. Consequently, some federations may see their allocations increase to three spots in the Champions League and three in the Confederation Cup based on current classification standards, with these additional teams starting their journey from the preliminary rounds. As a result, Al Ahly could participate in the Champions League next season instead of the Confederation Cup if CAF approves the request from the football association.
