Mendy's Injuries Put His Future at Real Madrid in Doubt

French full-back Ferland Mendy faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid as injuries continue to keep him out of the team's plans, missing the start of pre-season under new coach José Mourinho.

According to Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," Fran García's transfer to Real Betis has left Mourinho with only three options for the left-back position: Marc Cucurella, Álvaro Carreiras, and Ferland Mendy. However, Mendy is not expected to be fit until October as he recovers from surgery on his right quadriceps tendon.

The report added that injuries have been a recurring theme in Mendy's career since joining Real Madrid in 2019, as he has failed to complete a single season without physical issues, preventing him from showcasing his full potential.

The same source noted that repeated injuries have hindered Real Madrid from fully benefiting from the player, while also reducing the chances of a financial return from his sale, especially with the competition for his position intensifying due to Cucurella and Carreiras.

Mendy is contracted to Real Madrid until the summer of 2028, and the club hopes to have him back in the second half of the season, although the option of his departure remains on the table during the winter transfer window or in the summer of 2027 if he does not regain his place.

As for the player, he intends to stay with Real Madrid until the end of his contract, despite having only participated in nine matches last season, which has made the contract extension he signed a year ago not yield the results the club was hoping for.
