Iraqi Super Cup Returns Officially
The Iraqi Football Association has officially announced the return of the Iraqi Super Cup, after a hiatus of several years, to be included in next season's agenda.
The last edition of the tournament was held in 2021, featuring a match between Al-Shorta and Al-Karkh at the International Stadium in Baghdad.
Al-Shorta clinched the title with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from Abdulmajid Bou Bakr.
Since then, the tournament has been absent from the local scene, until the federation decided to bring it back in a new format.
The most significant change this time is the adoption of a semi-final and final system instead of a single match as was previously the case.
- The league champion (1st place) will face the 4th place team.
- Meanwhile, the league runner-up will take on the 3rd place team.
The winners of both matches will qualify for the final to determine the Super Cup champion.
Based on last season's standings, the semi-final matchups will be as follows:
The league champions, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, will face Al-Zawraa, who finished 4th.
Meanwhile, Al-Shorta, the runner-up, will meet Erbil, who finished 3rd.
The federation has not yet announced the dates and venues for the matches, which will be revealed later.
The history of the Iraqi Super Cup shows a clear dominance by Al-Zawraa, who tops the list of winners with 5 titles.
They are followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya with 2 titles, while Al-Shorta, Al-Talaba, and Al-Rasheed each have one title to their name.
