Gabi Returns to Atlético Madrid as Diego Simeone's Assistant
Atlético Madrid has officially announced the appointment of its legend and former captain, Gabriel Luis Fernández Arenas (Gabi), to the first team's coaching staff, taking on the role of assistant coach alongside Diego Simeone, starting from the new season.
Gabi is considered one of the club's most prominent symbols, having joined Atlético Madrid's academy at a young age before making his first-team debut in January 2004. The former midfielder played 417 official matches for the "Rojiblancos" over 11 seasons across two spells, and captained the team for six seasons.
During his time at the club, Gabi contributed to winning the La Liga title in 2014, the Copa del Rey in 2013, the Supercopa de España in 2014, as well as two UEFA Europa League titles in 2012 and 2018, and the UEFA Super Cup in 2012, serving as captain when lifting the last five trophies.
After retiring from football in 2020, Gabi began his coaching career with youth teams at Getafe, then took charge of the reserve team, before leading Real Zaragoza. Now, he returns to his old home at Atlético Madrid to embark on a new chapter within Simeone's coaching staff.
