Brazil captain Marquinhos has acknowledged that the Seleção is in a difficult period following their exit in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup after losing to Norway, emphasizing that the team needs a comprehensive review and a fresh start.

These comments from the Paris Saint-Germain defender came after the match, as Brazil exited the tournament despite having numerous stars, raising questions about the future of the national team.

Marquinhos stated: "It’s hard to explain, it’s very difficult to talk about, we have to accept this failure and engage in self-criticism. With the experience we have, we know these matches are extremely tough; every ball is crucial. Norway capitalized on their chances, while we squandered ours. We had many opportunities, and in the World Cup, the team that makes fewer mistakes advances to the next round."

He added: "We must acknowledge our mistakes. As the captain and one of the oldest players, I have to bear this feeling of guilt. The upcoming generations and future players need to take this into account. We must be patient with the young players; we shouldn’t arrive at the World Cup with such a preparation cycle."

Concluding his remarks, the Brazil captain said: "We gave everything we had, but we made mistakes at moments when we should have been more effective. Football today is very balanced; we need to learn from our mistakes and draw lessons from them. I thank everyone who attended the match and supported us, and I hope the people continue to support the players and future generations. There are four years of work until the next World Cup, and today marks the beginning of a new cycle."
