White House Intervenes in Balogun Case, Trump Comments on FIFA Decision
The participation of Folarin Balogun in the Round of 16 match against Belgium in the 2026 World Cup has sparked widespread controversy, following reports of intervention from the White House to review the red card issued to the United States forward.
According to reports, the White House made direct contact with FIFA, during which President Gianni Infantino was urged to reconsider the red card received by Balogun during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
In response, FIFA referred media inquiries to the independent disciplinary committee, emphasizing that the committee is the authority on such matters and operates with complete independence.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on FIFA's decision to suspend the player's ban: "Thank you, FIFA, for doing what is right and correcting a great injustice!".
The disciplinary committee had decided to suspend Balogun for one match, with the suspension being deferred, making the player eligible to participate against Belgium in the Round of 16 of the tournament.
