Portugal Advances to World Cup Round of 16 with Dramatic Win Over Croatia

Portugal has advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup after a thrilling 2-1 victory against Croatia in the Round of 32, held at the Toronto Stadium.

In the next round, Portugal will face Spain.

The first half saw Portugal having a slight edge in possession and control, with Bruno Fernandes nearly scoring an early goal in the fourth minute, but the Croatian defense and goalkeeper intervened just in time.

In the second half, Croatia came out strong, with Mateo Kovačić missing a crucial chance in the 48th minute before Ivan Perišić put Croatia ahead in the 53rd minute.

Rafael Leão struck a powerful shot that hit the crossbar in the 58th minute, and Cristiano Ronaldo equalized in the 61st minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Subsequently, the referee awarded a penalty to Portugal, which Ronaldo successfully converted to level the score in the 67th minute.

Kovačić nearly added a second for Croatia in the 75th minute, but his shot hit the post, while goalkeeper Diogo Costa continued to shine with another crucial save. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal with a brilliant header, capitalizing on a precise cross from Rafael Leão.

In the 90+13 minute, Croatia found the net through Joško Gvardiol, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for offside, sealing Portugal's victory and progression to the Round of 16.
