Romelu Lukaku, Belgium's striker, expressed his happiness in guiding his country to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal, emphasizing that the team's character and collective spirit were the main reasons for turning the match around and securing qualification.

Lukaku stated: "The match was extremely difficult; I am done with these kinds of matches. It was a tough game, but we gave it our all. We were behind in the score, but we showed strong character, and in such matches, that's what you need."

The Belgian forward praised Senegal's level, confirming that they are among the best teams in the tournament, saying: "Senegal is one of the best teams in the tournament; they were a strong opponent technically, physically, and tactically."

Lukaku explained that Belgium managed to change the course of the match thanks to intense pressure and team spirit, adding: "When we increased the pressure and were present for the second balls, our team spirit showed, and we won the match. Victories like this are what we need to bring the members of this team closer together."

He spoke about his goal in the match, saying: "I believe my father is up there helping me."

Lukaku revealed the reason he did not take the penalty, despite being initially assigned to do so, explaining: "Since I am still going through a tough time psychologically, I preferred that Yuri take it."
