Barcelona continues to prioritize its summer transfer strategy, deciding to delay the signing of a new defender while focusing on bolstering their attacking options. This comes as Argentine Cristian Romero seeks to end his tenure at Tottenham and move to La Liga, according to Spanish outlet "Sport".

The report states that Romero has informed Tottenham of his desire to leave, preferring a new challenge in Spain, where he is attracting interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. The Argentine defender, currently participating in the World Cup with his national team, aims to conclude his career in the Premier League.

Furthermore, the report highlights that Romero is admired by sporting director Deco and coach Hans Flick, and would have been the top choice to strengthen the center-back position had Barcelona decided to pursue a new signing there. However, the club is not planning to act at this time due to financial and tactical priorities.

Barcelona has several options in central defense, including Pau Torres, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araújo, and Gerard Piqué, along with the possibility of utilizing Jules Koundé in that role if needed. This has led Flick to postpone the idea of signing a new defender.

The report also mentions that Barcelona considered the possibility of selling Ronald Araújo this summer, but his struggles with physical issues during the World Cup, combined with his desire to stay, have made this scenario unlikely, temporarily closing the door on a move for Romero.

Tottenham remains firm on retaining the Argentine defender, valuing him at around €60 million, a fee that makes a transfer to Barcelona difficult during the current window, while Atlético Madrid continues its efforts to sign the player.
