Al-Zawraa Club officially announced its signing with international goalkeeper Ahmed Basel, coming from the traditional rival Al-Shorta Club, to defend the colors of the Al-Nawras in the upcoming 2026-2027 season of the Iraqi Stars League.

Al-Zawraa succeeded in capturing one of the most prominent names in the goalkeeper position in Iraq in recent years. Basel will be a significant addition to the Al-Nawras squad, especially with his extensive local and international experience.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper began his journey with Al-Shorta Club since the 2014 season. Over 12 years wearing the Qithara jersey, he carved his name strongly in the club's history. He achieved the Iraqi League title five times, added the Iraq Cup title, and two Super Cup titles. These championships made him one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the last decade.

Internationally, Ahmed Basel has become the first choice for the Lions of Mesopotamia's goal in recent times. He was present at the most important station in modern Iraqi football history when he started in the global playoff match against Bolivia, which granted Iraq a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

In the same World Cup, Basel played a full match against France and participated in the first half of the Senegal match before the team exited the tournament from the group stage.

The Al-Nawras management published an official statement through its accounts to confirm the deal, stating:

"Ahmed Basel lands at the leader's stronghold. Officially.. the international goalkeeper defends the Al-Nawras goal in the Iraqi Stars League 2026-2027. Let's start a new journey to protect the white nets, Basel."

Ahmed Basel's transfer from Al-Shorta to Al-Zawraa is considered one of the most prominent local transfer deals this summer. Al-Zawraa gains a goalkeeper with international experience and many local titles, while Al-Shorta loses one of its main pillars throughout the past decade.
