Cucurella: They Asked Me Not to Wear the Real Madrid Shirt, and Mourinho Gave Me Confidence
Spanish player Marc Cucurella spoke about his transfer to Real Madrid, revealing details of his communication with Portuguese coach José Mourinho, and expressed his excitement to start his journey with the royal club after the end of his participation in the 2026 World Cup.
Cucurella said that Mourinho's call was a significant motivation for him to take the step of joining Real Madrid, adding: 'As a football lover, when a coach of Mourinho's caliber calls you and tells you he wants to work with you, it gives you great confidence. It is an honor for me to receive this recognition from a coach with such a career.'
The Spanish defender confirmed that the communication between him and Mourinho has not stopped, saying: 'We are still in contact, he congratulated me after the first victory and sent me some short messages. I look forward to meeting him in person and starting to work with him.'
Regarding his feelings after moving to Real Madrid, he explained: 'So far, I haven't fully grasped it, because I am still with the national team and everything seems normal. But I am excited to start this phase, meet my new teammates, visit the Real Madrid sports city, and play my first match at Santiago Bernabéu.'
Cucurella also revealed a conversation with club officials about his official presentation, saying: 'I haven't spoken with Florentino Pérez yet, but they told me not to wear the Real Madrid shirt before the official presentation, because the president wants my first picture in the club's shirt to be next to him.'
Regarding the possibility of his friend Enzo Fernández joining Real Madrid, he said: 'Enzo congratulated me after my transfer, we are close friends. I don't know anything about his future, but if he wants to take this step, he is welcome.'
On facing Lamine Yamal in the Real Madrid shirt during the Clásico matches, Cucurella confirmed: 'I will give my best to defend my team. There might be strong confrontations between us on the field, but our relationship in the Spanish national team will remain the same.'
