Benatia Intervenes to Complete Greenwood's Transfer to Roma

Sunday 28-06-2026
Moroccan Mehdi Benatia plays a pivotal role in the ongoing negotiations between Roma and Marseille to complete the transfer of English striker Mason Greenwood during the summer transfer window.

The newspaper 'Corriere dello Sport' explained that Benatia is undertaking the role of mediator between the two clubs, benefiting from his close relationship with Marseille, having served as the sporting director of the French club between 2025 and 2026, before continuing his work with them as a consultant on transfer matters.

The report indicated that Roma has already reached an agreement with Greenwood and his agent regarding personal terms, while negotiations are still ongoing with Marseille to settle the financial terms.

Marseille is demanding an amount ranging between 50 and 55 million euros, especially since Manchester United holds a 40% stake in any future sale of the player, while Roma is preparing to make an offer valued at around 45 million euros, including bonuses.

These moves come in a race against time, as Marseille needs to complete a sale before June 30 to avoid breaching financial fair play rules, which gives Benatia's role significant importance in bridging the gap between the parties and finalizing the deal before the deadline.
