Why did Real Madrid delay the announcement of the Dumfries deal?

Saturday 27-06-2026
Real Madrid continues its preparations for the new season, but the official announcement of the signing of Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries is still delayed, despite the agreement with Inter Milan being complete and the deal ready to be finalized.

The Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" reported that Dumfries is the only signing that Real Madrid has not officially announced yet, even though the club has already announced its acquisition of Ibrahima Konate, Bernardo Silva, and Marc Cucurella, along with coach Jose Mourinho.

The newspaper clarified that the delay in the announcement is not related to any disagreements between the parties, as Real Madrid has reached a full agreement with Inter Milan and will pay the release clause in the player's contract, amounting to 20 million euros.

She added that the Royal Club will announce the deal after July 1st, purely for tax and accounting reasons, as the financial year for clubs ends on June 30th. Therefore, registering the deal after this date will count it within the 2026/2027 financial year instead of the 2025/2026 season.

The newspaper indicated that postponing the announcement also means that the value of the deal, along with its accounting depreciation and part of Dumfries' salary, will not be included in the current financial season's accounts but rather in the following season.

The report also indicated that recording the deal within the new financial year will also affect the team's salary cap set by the Spanish League, which is one of the main reasons behind delaying the official announcement of the Dutch international's joining Real Madrid.
