Klopp Withdraws from Interview Due to Question on Schweinsteiger's Comments on African Football

Thursday 25-06-2026
The German coach Jürgen Klopp withdrew from a television interview after he was asked to comment on the controversy surrounding his compatriot Bastian Schweinsteiger's statements about African football.

Schweinsteiger spoke on the German network ARD about the playing style of the Ivory Coast national team before their loss to Germany in Toronto, describing it as "African football" characterized by being "a little chaotic, unconventional, and perhaps less reliant on tactical aspects."

When asked by Deutsche Welle about these statements, Klopp refused to delve into the topic, asserting that he does not see himself as the right person to comment on such a sensitive issue.

Klopp said, "I have no chance to answer this question. It's a very serious topic, and I don't even know what would be appropriate to say. It might be viewed one way by Africans and differently by others, so I'm not here to talk about it," before ending the interview and leaving.
