The Death of Former Pyramids Coach Takis Gonias at Age 54

The news shook the football circles and brought back to the forefront his illustrious career that spanned decades both on and off the field.

The Greek club Levadiakos issued an official statement mourning the loss of Giannis, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a name closely associated with the club's history. The statement noted that the deceased began his football career within the club's ranks and spent five years wearing the team's jersey before moving on to broader stages in Greek and European football.

The club confirmed that Giannis left a distinctive mark thanks to his great passion for football and his athletic personality, both during his career as a player and later as a coach, which earned him widespread respect within the sports community.

Giannis was born in 1971 and excelled as an attacking midfielder, representing several prominent Greek clubs, most notably Olympiacos, Iraklis, and Panionios. He also had professional stints outside Greece with Spain's Sporting Gijón and Italy's Messina.

After retiring from playing, he turned to media work as an analyst and sports commentator, before returning to the world of football through coaching in 2013. He began his coaching career with Glyfada Club and then moved between several coaching experiences, achieving notable results.

The name Giannis became more prominent during his leadership of the clubs Episkopi and Kallithea, before taking over as coach of Ergotelis in the Greek league, where he continued to establish his tactical ideas and build his reputation as a coach with a clear personality.

In 2021, the late coach embarked on a notable Arab experience by taking charge of Pyramids FC, leading the team initially from June 29, 2021, to September 11, 2021, and then returning to the role from April 25, 2022, to January 4, 2023. He drew attention with his coaching style and technical approach, leaving an impression on followers of Egyptian football.

He also coached Wadi Degla from July 1, 2018, to February 11, 2020.
