How will the best third-placed teams be determined in the World Cup?

Tuesday 23-06-2026
The FIFA regulations outline the criteria used to determine the eight teams that will advance to the second round of the World Cup as the best third-placed teams.

According to the regulations, the first criterion is the number of points, followed by goal difference, then the number of goals scored. If the tie persists, the fair play record is considered.

Fair play points are calculated by deducting one point for each yellow card, three points for a sending-off resulting from two yellow cards, four points for a direct red card, and five points if a player receives a yellow card followed by a direct red card.

In the event of a tie after all the previous criteria, the FIFA World Ranking is used to separate the teams.
