Scaloni: Happy with the Qualification, and I No Longer Know What to Say About Messi
Argentinian national team coach Lionel Scaloni appeared at a press conference following the 2-0 victory over Austria, in the match held at AT&T Stadium, as part of the second round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
The coach said, "When we need to suffer, the team does it. At certain moments, we didn't have the ball, but credit goes to the team for knowing what to do at every moment."
He added: "Austria is a strong team, characterized by physicality and height, and we are very happy to qualify. When we were patient and controlled the ball, we knew we would find a solution and create scoring opportunities."
Regarding his players, he said: "We are pleased that Lisandro Martinez is doing well, and the way Otamendi has integrated gives us reassurance. We are satisfied with both of them."
He praised the team captain, Lionel Messi, saying: "Even when the team was struggling, Messi was retrieving the balls and was highly committed. This commitment is no coincidence; it creates something special. I no longer know what to say about him; there are no words that suffice. When Messi is active, everyone is active."
He added, "There were many families in the stadium, and if the children feel a sense of belonging to this team, that's what matters most."
He added, "We had things that needed improvement, but when we were patient, we found the right passes. We will see the result tonight, and if the situation allows, I will try to give playing time to all possible players."
He explained, "When the opponent attacks you with a large number of players, you have to defend well. The reading of the match was clear, and we can be better, but we are competing well. There are many teams competing for the World Cup title, and this edition does not rely solely on predictions, but also on psychological and physical aspects. We will be in this competition, but it will be difficult for everyone."
He concluded: "Lautaro delivered a great performance, and he and Julian understand the tactical message excellently. We are very happy to qualify; it seemed easy, but in reality, it wasn't. The World Cup is long, and we have many solutions, and we know that every player can make a contribution."
