After 96 Years: Tunisia and Japan in the 1000th World Cup Match

Sunday 21-06-2026
The match between the Tunisian and Japanese national teams is set to enter the history books, as it has been decided that this game will be the 1000th match in the history of the World Cup finals, 96 years after the first global tournament began in 1930.

The match holds special symbolic significance as it will become the first centennial encounter in World Cup history between an African team and an Asian team, following a series of historical milestones in the tournament across different generations of teams and continents.

The Tunisian national team will become the third African team to appear in one of the centennial matches of the World Cup, following Nigeria, which played the 500th match against Greece in the 1994 World Cup, and Ghana, which participated in the 800th match against Germany during the 2014 edition.

On the other hand, Japan will set a historical precedent for the Asian continent, as it becomes the first Asian team to play its 100th match in the history of the tournament, eight years after the 900th match that took place in the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Throughout the history of the World Cup, the national teams of Uruguay and France have stood out as the most frequent participants in these symbolic events. Uruguay has participated in three different centennial matches: the first against Austria in the 100th match of the 1954 World Cup, the second against Argentina in the 400th match during the 1986 edition, and the third against France in the 600th match of the 2002 World Cup.

As for France, its name is also associated with three significant centennial milestones, starting with the 600th match against Uruguay in the 2002 World Cup, then the 700th match against Spain in the 2006 edition, and finally the 900th match against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final.

The list of centennial matches throughout the history of the tournament has seen only two finals; the first was between England and West Germany in the 200th match during the 1966 World Cup final, while the second final was between France and Croatia in the 900th match of the Russia 2018 edition.
