Officially: FIFA Changes National Anthem Protocol After Thomas Tuchel's Complaint

Thursday 18-06-2026
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has decided to make an immediate amendment to the pre-match protocol for the 2026 World Cup, following a complaint from England's national team coach, Thomas Tuchel, regarding the positioning of photographers during the national anthem.

Tuchel expressed his dissatisfaction after England's victory over Croatia, stating that dozens of photographers formed a "wall" in front of him, preventing him from watching his players during the national anthem, which ruined a moment he described as very special in his first World Cup match.

FIFA responded quickly to the feedback, deciding to adjust the photographers' positions and allow coaches and technical staff members to position themselves in a way that gives them a clear view of the players during the national anthem ceremonies. The decision is to be implemented immediately in upcoming matches.

This is considered one of the fastest regulatory adjustments adopted during the current tournament, after Tuchel's complaint received widespread attention within football and media circles.
