Confusion Between Teams Costs Veteran Commentator His Position at the World Cup

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation TRT decided to terminate the duties of the commentator for the Iran vs. New Zealand match in the 2026 World Cup after he made a mistake that sparked widespread controversy, which involved confusing the two teams during the commentary for about four minutes.

The organization issued an official statement confirming that what happened does not align with its professional standards, indicating that an administrative and regulatory investigation was immediately launched, along with an apology to viewers and the public.

It also announced the withdrawal of the commentator from the World Cup coverage team in the United States, confirming that he will not continue participating in broadcasting the tournament's matches, despite having over 30 years of experience in sports commentary.

TRT emphasized that it does not tolerate any practices or errors that violate broadcasting standards, considering the mistake that occurred during the Iran vs. New Zealand match to be unacceptable, regardless of the experience of the person responsible.
