Saudi Arabia Challenges Uruguay with Offensive Message: We Will Not Wait for the Opponent

Monday 15-06-2026
The Saudi national team begins its journey in the 2026 World Cup with a strong match against Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa. This comes amid bold statements from Greek coach Georgios Donis, who asserted that his team will not play defensively or merely wait for the opponent. He emphasized that the team's philosophy is based on boldness, having a clear identity, and striving to achieve its goals on the field.

Before the scheduled match in Miami, Donis said: "Our philosophy is based on courage, having a defined identity, and striving to achieve what we want," adding, "We are not here to prepare a passive team that merely waits for the opponent and defends." This message comes ahead of facing the Uruguay national team led by Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most prominent coaches known for an attacking style.

The Greek coach enters the tournament shortly after taking over from the Frenchman Hervé Renard, admitting that the time was not sufficient to prepare the team ideally. He explained that he only supervised 12 training sessions and that knowing the players as competitors is different from directly coaching them.

The Saudi national team played three friendly matches under Donis's leadership before the World Cup. They lost to Ecuador 2-1, then achieved a 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico, and finally drew 0-0 with Senegal. The common theme in the coach's statements was the desire to play attacking football and not to relinquish initiative.
