Montella After Turkey's Loss to Australia: Luck Was Not on Our Side

Sunday 14-06-2026
Vincenzo Montella, the coach of the Turkish national team, confirmed that his team did not expect an easy match against Australia, which the Turks lost 0-2 in the first round of the World Cup. He pointed out that small details and luck played a significant role in the result, despite the great offensive dominance displayed by his players.

Montella said: "We had to stop the counterattacks, which is why we brought in Mert Müldür and Salih Özcan. Arda Güler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu haven't played 90 minutes for a long time, so we needed to add players with energy. We took shots on goal, but that's football... when the ball doesn't go into the net, nothing happens. We have 30 shots, and we still have time, and we will give it our all."

The Italian coach added: "If luck is not on your side, you lose. We came very close to scoring but couldn't break through their defense. They are very tall, and facing an opponent with this style is not easy. I congratulate Australia; they played a great match, and our chances are still alive."

Montella concluded his statements by saying: "We never thought the match against Australia would be easy. We must not lose our mental balance. Nothing happened outside of our expectations, as we knew the way they would play, and we will continue to rely on our usual style."
